Belgium doubles the number of counterfeit banknotes in circulation in one year
BRUSSELS, Jan. 17 (EUROPA PRESS) -

Belgium has doubled in a year the number of counterfeit euro banknotes that were put into circulation, going from 27,415 in 2009 to 43,675 this year, this is an increase of 59%, according to the data published this Monday by the National Bank of Belgium.

The most popular 'fake' notes in 2010 were those of 50 euros, with 54% of the seizures, followed by those of 20 euros.

However, they represent a fairly small proportion with respect to legal tender notes, about 450 million.

Counterfeit euro notes withdrawn by the ECB fell by 12.6%

FRANKFURT (GERMANY), Jan. 17 (EUROPA PRESS) -

A total of 751,102 counterfeit euro banknotes were withdrawn from circulation in 2010, a figure representing a decrease of 12.6% compared to the amount recovered in the previous year, according to data from the European Central Bank (ECB).

Specifically, during the second half of 2010, a total of 364,102 counterfeit euro banknotes were withdrawn from circulation, representing a decrease of 5.9% compared to the amount recovered in the previous six months.

The 50 euro note was once again the most counterfeit in the second half, accounting for 43.5% of the total counterfeit notes detected, followed by the 20 euro bill, with 38%, and the 100 euro bill, with the 13.5% of the total recovered. The least counterfeit notes were those of 5 euros (0.5%), followed by those of 10, 200 and 500 euros (1.5% each).

The majority of counterfeit notes withdrawn in the second half of 2010 (97%) were detected in euro area countries, only around 1.5% in non-euro area EU Member States and 1.5% elsewhere in the world.

In this regard, the ECB stressed that if one compares the figures of counterfeit euro banknotes detected with the growing number of authentic euro banknotes in circulation "the proportion of counterfeit banknotes is still very small".
